A Few Facts About Central Maui

Central Maui is home to most of the “kamaaina”, or local residents of the Valley Island. Unlike the tourist-oriented coastal regions of Maui, in Central Maui you’re more likely to find a Costco or Wal-Mart than a five star resort and spa. Central Maui is home to the largest airport and most populous city on Maui, Kahului, which is home to the Kanaha Wildlife Sanctuary, which offers a nature walk and plenty of bird watching opportunities. Central Maui enjoys moderate levels of rainfall, warm temperatures, and trade winds throughout almost all of the calendar year, while some condominiums and apartments offer views of Haleakala and the coast.

There are also a number of smaller towns in Central Maui, including Puunene, Waikapu, and Wailuku, which are home to interesting attractions such as the Maui Tropical Plantation, the Bailey House Museum, shopping opportunities, and local restaurants. Central Maui encapsulates the Iao Valley, a ten mile, four thousand acre area filled with the majestic Iao Needle (a 2,250 foot rock formation), swimming holes, hiking paths, and beautiful flora and fauna. In addition to destinations such as the Hawaii Nature Center and the Alexander and Baldwin Sugar Museum, the beaches and coast are only a short drive away from Central Maui.
