Makawao is a relatively small community found in the north central portion of the island of Maui. Makawao has a population of approximately six thousand three hundred residents and is technically considered a census designated place of the Valley Island. Like the rest of the Aloha State, Makawao offers outstanding weather and a warm, breezy climate throughout the year, including pleasant trade winds, high temperatures, and the occasional tropical shower. Makawao is situated in what is considered “Up Country” Maui, on the slope of the island’s largest mountain, beautiful Haleakala.

Makawao has the reputation of being the last true “paniolo”, or Hawaiian cowboy town. This distinction lends the community an interesting cultural aura, leading to it being the informal hub of Up Country Maui. Makawao is surrounded by land used for the production of pineapple, one of the top agricultural exports of the Aloha State. Makawao is home to a number of art galleries, boutiques, and other interesting offerings that line the main street, Baldwin Avenue. Makawao also boasts some great local cooking, coffee, and even one of Hawaii’s most popular rodeos, held annually on the Fourth of July.
