Lahaina is a relatively small community that is nonetheless the largest community in the western portion of Maui, the Valley Island. Lahaina has a population of approximately nine thousand one hundred residents, and is technically considered a census designated place of the Aloha State. Lahaina played a critical role in the government and history of Hawaii, both under the Kingdom of Hawaii, when it served as the capital of the islands, and in the nineteenth century, when Lahaina was the center of the Pacific whaling industry. Lahaina means “merciless sun”, a testament to the persistently sunny, tropical weather that dominates all of the island chain.

Lahaina is home to a number of nationally important sporting events, most notably the PGA Tour’s Mercedes-Benz Championship, held at the Plantation Golf Course, the Vic-Maui Yacht Race, and the Maui Invitational, a college basketball tournament. Lahaina is home to a huge banyan tree in the midst of Courthouse Square, as well as a large selection of outstanding restaurants and cultural sites.
