Waimea is a relatively small community found on the southwestern coast of the island of Kauai. Waimea has a population of approximately one thousand eight hundred residents and is technically considered a census designated place. Waimea literally translates from Hawaiian into English to mean “red water”, and is known widely as a popular tourist destination. Waimea is a quite tranquil community considering its popularity, and sports extraordinary views of valley, canyons, and the ocean. Waimea sports excellent weather throughout the entire year due to its great location in the midst of the Pacific Ocean. Waimea is home to a statue of Captain James Cook, which remembers the spot where Europeans made first contact with native Hawaiians. Waimea’s namesake canyon, Waimea Canyon, also known as the Grand Canyon of the Pacific, is located just inland, and is more than half a mile deep. Waimea Canyon is a popular spot for hikers and tourists, and is also noted for its photographic, panoramic, and scenic beauty. Notable nearby attractions include Kalalau Lookout, Kekaha Beach Park, Kokee Natural History Museum, Menehune Ditch, and the old Russian Fort Elizabeth.
