Laupahoehoe is an extremely small community found to the north of the county seat, Hilo. Laupahoehoe is a highly historic village with a cultural and ethnic legacy extending past the days of sugar cane back into the times of ancient Hawaii and Polynesia. Laupahoehoe was originally settled by Americans and Europeans in the middle part of the nineteenth century, growing gradually until it at one point exceeded three thousand inhabitants. Laupahoehoe’s name literally means “leaf of lava”, a reminder of the prodigious power of the volcanoes that spawned Hawaii.

Laupahoehoe is infamous for the destruction wrought there by the nineteen forty six tsunami, which effectively ended the commercial viability of the region. The memory of those lost survives in the form of a beautiful stone monument erected at the seashore. Laupahoehoe had a population of four hundred seventy three at the time of the last census, making it small even by the standards of the Big Island. Hilo is a relatively short drive away from Laupahoehoe, while recreational activities abound in the beautiful waters of the Pacific Ocean.
