A little about Hamakua Coast
The Hamakua Coast is the portion of the Big Island of Hawaii along the northeastern waterfront areas. The Hamakua Coast is generally considered the windward coast of the Big Island, encompassing a number of small towns, districts, and villages, including parts of the aptly named Hamakua, South Hilo, and North Hilo. The Hamakua Coast, like much of the Hawaiian Island chain, is the result of volcanic activities, in this case specifically the dormant Mauna Kea and Kohala.
Common natural features along the Hamakua Coast include streams, cliffs, small beaches, and valleys. Unlike a good portion of the Big Island, the Hamakua Coast experiences substantial rainfall as a result of its location along the Windward Coast. The Hamakua Coast was once a heavy sugar cane-producing region, and plays a heavy part in ancient Hawaiian mythology. Notable tourist attractions along the Hamakua Coast include Akaka Falls, the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden, the World Botanical Gardens, Umauma Falls, and Kolekole Beach Park.
