A little about Kau

The Kau district of the Big Island of Hawaii is the southernmost portion of the island and consequently the southernmost region in the entire United States of America. Kau encompasses the southern communities of South Point, Hawaiian Ocean View Estates, Hawaiian Ocean View Ranchos, Hawaiian Ranchos, Naalehu, and Pahala. The coastal location of much of Kau district makes it ideal for recreational activities including swimming, surfing, boating, and fishing for a wide variety of local species.

Kau is generally sparsely populated, but still offers fantastic views of the ocean and in some cases the mountains. Kau is home to the Kamoa Wind Farm, one of the only places in the state where windmills are used to generate electricity. One of the most popular destinations in Kau is South Point, which represents both the southernmost point in the United States and the site of the first landing of the Polynesians who settled the Hawaiian Islands. Other attractions include the Green Sand Beach, Waiohinu, Punaluu Beach Park, Pahala, and the Wood Valley Temple.
