A little about Honokaa
Honokaa is one of the few distinct census designated places found in the sparsely populated northeastern portion of the island of Hawaii. Honokaa has a population of only about two thousand two hundred residents, making it quite small but large relative to the surrounding rural areas. Honokaa was historically known for its involvement in the sugar industry, and almost the entire economy of the community was based on the Hamakua Sugar Company’s presence in the area from the years eighteen seventy three to nineteen ninety four.
Honokaa is home to a “downtown” historic district, which is home to the Honokaa People’s Theater, the site of the annual Hamakua Music Festival. Honokaa is the hometown of Governor John Waihee III, and is well known for its Andrade Meat Market and farmer’s market. Honokaa is home to the Honokaa Elementary School, Honokaa Middle Schook and Honokaa High School, all of which use the Dragon as their mascot. Other points of interest in and around Honokaa include Western Weekend, the beaches and waterfront, and the historic sites of the Hamakua Coast.
