The district of North Hilo lies in the northeastern section of the Big Island along the Hamakua Coast. It has an ideal tropical climate and is full of agricultural land and forests. More affluent areas of Laupahoehoe include Waikaumalo-Maulua and Waipunalei Homesteads where properties start in the upper-$700s and climb to over $2 million.
