Captain Cook is a census designated place found in the southern portion of the Big Island of Hawaii. Captain Cook takes its name from the post office of the Captain Cook Coffee Company formerly found in the community, which in turn is named after world famous explorer Captain James Cook, the first European to discover and set foot upon the “Sandwich Islands”. Captain Cook also bears the somewhat dubious distinction of being located in Kealakekua District, named after Kealakekua Bay, where Captain James Cook was killed by an angry contingent of Native Hawaiian warriors.
Census Bureau statistics place the population of Captain Cook at about three thousand two hundred residents, while the community is about a thousand feet above sea level on average.
