A little about Pahala

Pahala is a very small census designated place found in the southern portion of the island of Hawaii near the coast. Pahala has a population of approximately one thousand four hundred residents, making it a recognizable town in the generally rural area, but allowing it to maintain a pleasant, tranquil, rural feel. The community’s name refers to burnt leaves of the hala tree, a reminder of the early plantation history of the region. In fact, the town was created by a sugar plantation, with its location chose because of a number of distinguishing factors.

Pahala was first settled by plantation workers in the latter part of the nineteenth century, and it slowly developed until the gradual decline of the sugar plantations towards the end of the twentieth century. In the modern day, Pahala’s economy centers on the small scale farming of coffee, flowers, macadamia nuts, and cattle. The community has experienced something of a small scale revival with the construction of a wide variety of accommodations and the continued presence of the Pahala Plantation Cottages and several convenient stores.
