A little about Hanapepe
Hanapepe, which literally means “crushed bay”, is a relatively small community found in the southern portion of the Garden Island. Hanapepe has a population of approximately two thousand two hundred residents, and is technically considered a census designated place. Hanapepe is nicknamed the “biggest little town”, and has a rich historical and cultural heritage dating back to the founding of the community in the late nineteenth century. Hanapepe is home to the famous swinging bridge, is located along Highway 50, and was the filming site of “The Thorn Birds”.
Hanapepe is home to a number of art galleries, small shops, and restaurants, while the Hanapepe Valley Lookout is a great place to look at the entirety of the community and valley. Hanapepe is located near the Salt Pond Beach Park, and was also used to film parts of Jurassic Park. Popular recreational activities in and around Hanapepe include biking, swimming, fishing, snorkeling, hiking, surfing, and boating. Hanapepe boasts a weekly Art Night Open House, and other nearby communities include Kalaheo, Waimea, Lawai, Koloa, Makaweli, Kekaha, and Poipu. Hanapepe boasts great weather throughout the year, and many spots offer views of the ocean, mountains, and valley.
