A little about Hakalau

Hakalau is a relatively small, unincorporated village found in the northeastern portion of the Big Island of Hawaii. Hakalau is located along the Hamakua Coast, making sure that ocean views and easy access to the seaside are commonplace. Hakalau has shrunken substantially since the decline of the plantations and sugar cane in the islands. Until the middle of the twentieth century, Hakalau was at the center of economic and cultural activity, marked by a thriving sugar plantation, extensive tracts of housing, and many different, intermingling ethnic groups.

Hakalau is a much smaller community today, but this does not in any way detract from the convenience of the lovely homes found here. Hakalau is only about fifteen minutes north of the county seat, Hilo, which is the largest community on the island and the second largest population center in the entire state of Hawaii. Hakalau is now characterized by small farms, large plots of land, a great location along the Hamakua Coast, and the pristine natural beauty of the Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Preserve.
